The re-elected president of Zanzibar celebrated his victory on Monday with his supporters.
He was declared the winner with 91.4 percent of the vote, the electoral commission said.
“I want to thank all of you who voted for me and even those who did not vote for me, since all are citizens of this nation and can exercise their democratic power as they see fit. This is the decision of our citizens, they gave me 90% of the vote, and gave me the great task to lead this nation for the next five years,” Ali Mohamed Shein, President of Zanzibar said.
Following the political tensions in Zanzibar in recent years, many voices in opposition have demanded a return to the independence of the archipelago.
A group of Western diplomats have said that they regretted the decision for the Zanzibar poll re-run.
The 68-year-old would be sworn in on Thursday.
